Many of the children and young people entering care come with complex mental health needs – often involving physical, emotional or sexual abuse.

In order to promote stronger and more resilient mental health in our looked after children, Clifford House provides a therapeutic environment in which individuals are encouraged to learn how to manage their feelings and behaviours, and make more appropriate decisions so that they can develop both as individuals and as members of society.

We have also commissioned the services of a Clinical Psychologist who is experienced in working with survivors of abuse in order to:

  • Provide professional psychological input into the Care Planning of the young people in our care.
  • Deliver short-term therapeutic input in situations where it is felt immediate intervention is required.
  • Raise the level of awareness amongst the Clifford House staff teams and our Professional Foster Carers of their understanding and use of appropriate psychological approaches, via formal and informal training opportunities.
  • Undertake psychological assessments with individual Clifford House residents on behalf of commissioning authorities, subject to separate funding being agreed.

Through Clifford House, you can also commission the supplementary services of our own experienced Cognitive Behavioural Therapist, who specialises in working with survivors of abuse, self-harm, self-injury and eating disorders.

In those cases where it has been identified that a young person might benefit from external specialist therapeutic input, Clifford House can provide access to a network of qualified and suitably experienced psychiatrists and psychologists, as well as a range of professional organisations and individuals who offer specific child counselling and therapy.

Our policy is to secure the very best services available.

As the purchaser, you may prefer a practitioner of your own choice. In these circumstances, however, we believe that the counselling and therapy is at its most effective if our residential support workers are given the opportunity to share any relevant information with those undertaking this work.

We are also pleased to assist in enabling work that has already been started to continue by providing transport for appointments and providing verbal information on recent behaviour prior to a session.

Clifford House does not seek to profit from externally purchased therapies, and placing authorities may choose to be invoiced separately by the therapist.
